project description

Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners, is a 47,000 seat baseball park. Notable features include a retractable roof and natural grass turf. Special mechanical system features include a field drainage collection system to re-use rainwater for the 11 sprinkler zones, an under-turf hot water loop to provide frost protection, and a sub-grade field air system to draw off moisture from the field. Building support spaces include team offices, concessions, kitchens, restaurants, locker rooms, exercise suites, medical care area, and a central plant building.

services provided

A joint venture between EEI and WJC, as the WBE Company, WJC provided Test Engineer Services. WJC performed design review, wrote/executed 95% of the functional performance tests, assisted in the Owner’s Engineering personnel training, conducted the weekly meetings, and actively participated in the identification and solution to many complex mechanical system deficiencies. WJC utilized statistical sample testing (30%) and DDC trending to verify system performance where large quantities were involved, substantially reducing overall commissioning costs to the Owner.

systems tested

DDC controls, 2 cooling towers, 5 heating hot water boilers, 12 HVAC pumps, 17 air handling units, 188 air terminal units, 141 water-source heat pumps, 18 air-cooled heat pumps, 186 exhaust fans, 20 unit heaters, 320 radiant electric heaters, 23 kitchen hood exhaust systems, 7 kitchen make-up air units, TAB verification of air and water systems, 42 domestic water heaters, and 7 sump pumps.
